Only 3.5km into the valley from CC’s is the resort of Ölüdeniz which is second only to the Istanbul skyline in terms of recognition. Here is the famous Blue Lagoon that features on a multitude of tourism videos, posters, postcards and brochures.
Oludeniz can be ferociously hot in the summer compared to the hillside hotels, with many days peaking at well over 40C in the shade – so take care! The wide fine-shingle Belcekiz beach is backed by a numerous bars and restaurants, with excursion boat trips and a variety of water sports available from the beach itself. On one end of the beach is the famous lagoon that gives Ölüdeniz its name (Dead Sea); although this is conservation area visitors are admitted for a small fee and once inside it is easy to find a secluded sunbathing spot next to the shallow lagoon.
The best beaches here are across the water from the conservation area at the Saura Beach Club and the trendy Sugar Beach Club, both on the lagoon. In both cases entry is free, the beach is soft and sandy, and the sea is shallow and very warm. Around the lagoon is perfect for families with children, and there are a number of on-the-beach bars and restaurants where mums and dads can relax whilst still keeping an eye on the kiddies. Oludeniz is the archetypal picture postcard beach resort backed by dramatic pine clad mountains. Literally translated as ‘dead sea’, the stunning blue lagoon is a protected area ensuring that its natural beauty is preserved. There is a small entrance charge to use the main lagoon beach, other beaches such as Suara Beach are free, and only non motorised water sports are permitted. The main resort beach is a long stretch of coarse sand and shingle known as Belcegiz. Most of houses and hotels in Oludeniz, built in the traditional regional style, are set back from the beachfront. Along the promenade there is a large number of relaxing bars and restaurants serving local and international cuisines. In Oludeniz shops and bars stay open well into the night and the resort stays very lively into the small hours
It is a perfect family resort, great for a laid back holiday, and with plenty of facilities but not too much development it is truly a world class location.
